Renovating Health Facilities

Description

This project responds to a community-defined need to improve access to essential health services in a rural island area where the local health dispensary has been non-operational for about one to two years due to incomplete staff housing. During this period, residents have had to travel by boat to the mainland for basic medical care, creating financial, transportation, and safety challenges, especially in emergencies and poor weather.

The project aims to complete a safe and functional nurse’s house and prepare the existing dispensary for future health service delivery. Community members have already provided extensive volunteer labor and materials, bringing the house to roughly eighty percent completion and adding a staff toilet. Grant funding will cover remaining materials and finishing work such as doors, water system connections, painting, and completion of a verandah for health education activities.

Once finished, the nurse’s house will remove a key infrastructure barrier and allow periodic outreach visits from health workers based at a nearby health centre. Visiting staff will stay in the house while offering basic services, maintaining patient records, conducting screenings, and leading health education sessions. The project will also strengthen local knowledge through practical demonstrations on nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, maternal and child health, and water safety. Expected results include a completed nurse’s house, a rehabilitated dispensary, improved access to outreach services, strengthened community understanding of key health practices, and better readiness for future staffing.
