Drowning Prevention Swimming Program
Description
This grant will support a week‑long drowning prevention swim camp that brings together six Peace Corps Volunteers, five counterparts, and one counselor in training to instruct forty students. The camp will provide essential water safety skills such as treading water, swimming to safety, responding to emergencies, and practicing safe conduct in and around the water. Instruction will take place through pool sessions, dry‑land training, and team‑focused activities designed to strengthen both skills and cooperation.
The initiative aims to reduce drowning risk for students who have limited access to trained instructors or supervised swimming facilities. Grant funds will ensure that participants receive foundational swim instruction, addressing a critical gap in available resources. Community leaders, youth center members, and additional Peace Corps Volunteers have expressed strong support for this effort as a meaningful local initiative.
Beyond technical water safety training, the camp seeks to strengthen broader life skills including personal responsibility, self‑awareness, self‑control, risk management, patience, and a dedication to healthy habits. Local authorities will provide transportation, and the host institution will waive lodging and pool fees, lowering costs and ensuring the camp remains accessible for participating students.
