Community Park Initiative

playground
Project by Arlene L., Volunteer from Massachusetts
Moldova Youth

Description

The project aims to engage adult volunteers, youth ages 9 to 15, and teachers in creating a Montessori-style playground made from natural materials, along with a communal resting area for families. Coordinators will hold focus groups with elementary and middle school students to design features they want, such as spaces for chess, table tennis, or bowling, after which parents will finalize the plans with a professional landscaper. A trained woodworker will guide volunteers in repairing and constructing tables, benches, playground elements, and equipment for games and sports, based on community priorities and available resources. Solar lighting will be added to increase the usefulness of the space.

Adult volunteers, youth, and local employees will explore creative fundraising and online promotion, ultimately strengthening trust and financial connections between the community and its members living abroad. Activities include strengthening service learning skills such as organizing, communication, budgeting, and fundraising, as well as practical workshops in park design and woodworking. Communal tree planting, park clean-ups, waste management, and social or educational gatherings — including read alouds and science lessons — will support the space’s ongoing development. These efforts are intended to create a welcoming shared space that reflects community priorities and supports meaningful connection among residents.
