Trail Intelligence Network
Description
This project strengthens the management and long‑term upkeep of hiking routes in a mountain region known for its dramatic terrain and diverse plant and animal life. Many guesthouses along these routes are small, family-run operations that evolved from older rural homes into businesses providing lodging, meals, and local guidance for visitors. As visitor numbers have grown, gaps in route monitoring have become more apparent, leading to worn or unclear signage, poorly routed paths, and scattered waste, all of which affect visitor experience and reduce income for small tourism enterprises.
The project aims to improve communication, monitoring, and internal data collection for the route network. It will introduce a digital reporting platform that allows visitors to send location-based observations about route conditions to local organizations. Ten guesthouses positioned along key routes will host reporting points where travelers can easily share feedback during their stay. Five outdoor organizations will help verify reports and document conditions using handheld location devices.
Information gathered through the project will be organized into practical guidance that supports route mapping, maintenance planning, advocacy efforts, and improved experiences for visitors. By embedding reporting into everyday tourism routines, the project will strengthen local skills in route monitoring, mapping tools, and the use of collected data in decision-making. The initiative directly responds to needs identified by community members and supports the region’s efforts to offer a high-quality experience for hikers and other outdoor travelers.
