Pre-Departure Checklist

Complete these steps prior to beginning your Peace Corps service.

Learn more about the pre-departure process: Once you accept an invitation to the Peace Corps, there are some important things you must do.

  • Immediately after invitation

    Medical clearance

    The Medical Portal is where you will access your medical clearance tasks. Make sure to check back regularly to see if new tasks have populated. You must complete all tasks by their due date. Please allow time for processing and follow-up.

    Requests for reimbursement of medical costs not covered by your primary insurance provider may be submitted via the International Medical Group (IMG) Portal.

    Legal clearance

    The Applicant Portal is where you will submit OFI Form 86C, a legal clearance task. Please review your emails from the Legal Placement Team for guidance.

    Passport and visa

    On the Passport and Visa Application Instructions page, you’ll find guidance to complete your passport application along with visa information for all countries of service where they are required. Your Country Desk Officer will provide further details.

  • 3 months prior to departure

    • Submit aspiration statement
    • Update resume (if applicable)
    • Contact your student loan lender about meeting your obligations
  • 2 months prior to departure

    You will receive an email link with access to the Onboarding Portal. This portal is where you will submit important pre-departure information such as:

    • Emergency contact
    • Direct deposit
    • Student loan certification

    Please complete the tasks immediately after receiving your access email.

  • 45 days prior to departure

    Learning Space is where you will find many resources to help prepare you for service. Assigned courses for all invitees include:

    • Core Expectations for Peace Corps Volunteers
    • Safety and Security Orientation

    Depending on your country of service, other courses or tasks may be required. For questions about Learning Space, please contact your Country Desk Officer.

  • 30 days prior to departure

    Receive staging reporting instructions.

  • 1 day prior to departure

    Become a Peace Corps trainee and meet your training class.
