Statement from Director Aaron S. Williams on Hispanic Heritage Month

WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 15, 2010—"I am pleased to designate Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, 2010, as Hispanic Heritage Month at the Peace Corps. This years national theme is \'Heritage, Diversity, Integrity, and Honor: The Renewed Hope of America.\'

"The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into law on Aug. 17, 1988.

"Hispanics have integrated their rich cultural heritage into the fabric of American society. The contributions made by Latino Americans in all walks of life have positively influenced and shaped our nations identity.

"For the next 30 days, please join me in celebrating the diversity of the Hispanic community, the service of our Hispanic volunteers, and the commitment of our Hispanic returned Peace Corps volunteers who bring the Peace Corps experience home to America and enrich our nation with their continued service.

"Hispanic Heritage Month provides us the opportunity to recognize and honor the diversity of the American people. As we celebrate the accomplishments of Latino Americans, I encourage you to participate in the activities we will have here at Peace Corps headquarters and in your own communities."
