Readout of Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn’s Meeting with United States Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa, Dr. Reuben E. Brigety, II

Pretoria, South Africa – As part of her visit to South Africa for COP23 and the United States (US) President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn met with the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa, Dr. Reuben E. Brigety, II in Pretoria, South Africa. During the meeting, Director Spahn and Ambassador Brigety, II reflected on the 26 years of the Peace Corps in South Africa and discussed a range of issues, including the agency’s operations in the country and how to support South Africa’s education and health goals. Both parties emphasized the value of the Peace Corps HIV/AIDS outreach project which provides advice to community-based organizations and services at the grassroots level.

Peace Corps South Africa opened in 1997 and more than 1,700 Volunteers have served to date. Peace Corps South Africa currently has 13 volunteers working in the education and health sectors.

Following her meeting with Ambassador Brigety, Director Spahn visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation which engages around critical social issues, including human rights and democracy, to contribute to a just society.
