Peace Corps volunteers share America’s 250th anniversary with the world
WASHINGTON – Peace Corps commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this week. The agency and its more than 3,100 Peace Corps volunteers worldwide will celebrate both our nation’s independence and the Peace Corps’ 65th anniversary by engaging in Fourth of July celebrations overseas and sharing American history and traditions with host country students, partners and community members.
In addition, the agency is inviting returned Peace Corps volunteers who have embodied American values and skills in 144 countries across the agency’s 65-year history to help carry on this legacy of service. Returned volunteers are encouraged to share stories of their time with the Peace Corps and connect with prospective applicants.
In honor of its nearly 250,000 returned volunteers and the nation’s 250th anniversary, the agency also aims to inspire 250 donations to its Global Fund in the month of July. The fund, which supports volunteer projects around the world, is part of the national Giving 4th initiative, the America250-led movement to transform Independence Day into the largest single day of charitable giving and volunteer service in United States history.
“For 65 years, Peace Corps volunteers have modeled democratic values, personified American generosity and created lasting connections abroad,” said Peace Corps Chief of Staff Richard E. Swarttz. “For the nation’s Semiquincentennial, volunteers are celebrating America’s birthday with the world while demonstrating the value of service to family, friends and neighbors back at home.”
Peace Corps volunteers collaborate with host country partners on locally prioritized projects, gaining skills and experience, while fostering mutual understanding, and promoting American values.
