{'html': "Washington, D.C., October 29, 1999—Acting Peace Corps Director Charles Baquet III said today that all 64 Peace Corps volunteers serving in Armenia are safe. He said not one volunteer was directly affected by Wednesday's seizure of the Armenian parliament by gunmen, which resulted in the assassinations of the prime minister and other key government officials.
As a precaution, the volunteers have been instructed not to travel to the capital city of Yerevan until further notice. However, Baquet said that Peace Corps staff members in Yerevan report that life has gone back to normal in the city and there does not seem to be any negative residual effects.
Currently, more than 7,000 Peace Corps volunteers are working in 78 countries to bring clean water to communities, teach children, protect the environment, help start new businesses, and prevent the spread of AIDS. Since 1961, more than 155,000 Americans have joined the Peace Corps.
