Peace Corps Provides Notice of Discontinuation of PC Medlink

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 8, 2016 – Peace Corps today announced the discontinuation of PC Medlink. PC Medlink was an electronic information system that allowed volunteers to order their medical supplies, including such items as antibacterial ointments, Ace bandages, and Band-Aids, from the Peace Corps Medical Office via text message service (SMS) or the World Wide Web. Peace Corps recently learned that PC Medlink was not in compliance with the federal security requirements and the system is now inoperable.

Because PC Medlink – and the information contained on it – was potentially vulnerable, the agency acted promptly to shut it down, directing volunteers to submit their medical resupply orders through more conventional means. Although the PC Medlink system contained sensitive data, it did not include Social Security numbers or financial information.

In accordance with applicable regulations and agency policies, Peace Corps has notified the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as other agencies and affected individuals. Peace Corps is confident that the steps taken will minimize the risk that confidential information will be further exposed, and that the health of volunteers will not be affected by the discontinuation of the PC Medlink system.
