Peace Corps Partners with Americas Service Commissions

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 25, 2010 The Peace Corps and Americas Service Commissions (ASC) have partnered to help recruit and train the next generation of Peace Corps volunteers and prepare young Americans for careers in todays global marketplace.

ASC represents 53 state service commissions that oversee more than 650 AmeriCorps programs and 33,000 AmeriCorps members nationwide. These programs address community needs in the areas of health, education, economic opportunity, and clean energy and the environment.

Americans serving in ASC programs gain valuable skills working in local communities across the country, said Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams. I am excited about our new partnership with ASC and the experience and commitment to public service that ASC program members will bring to the Peace Corps.

ASC will encourage its programs members and alumni to consider serving local communities abroad with Peace Corps. The Peace Corps will, in turn, encourage returned volunteers to consider employment and volunteer opportunities at ASCs programs and state commissions. The two organizations will also exchange training and technical assistance materials and connect ASC members with currently serving and returned Peace Corps volunteers for mutual support and mentoring.

We are excited to partner with the Peace Corps, said Tom Branen, ASCs Executive Director. AmeriCorps members who go on to serve in the Peace Corps develop international experience and cross-cultural understanding that are valuable assets in todays global economy. AmeriCorps programs will benefit from Peace Corps volunteers experience abroad.
