Peace Corps Honors Shriver's 95th Birthday

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 9, 2010 Statement from Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams on the 95th birthday of first Peace Corps Director Sargent Shriver:

Today marks the 95th birthday of Sargent Shriver, a visionary American, dedicated public servant and the first director of the Peace Corps. Sargent Shriver helped shape and define the Peace Corps a public service agency on the cusp of commemorating 50 years of promoting world peace and friendship around the world.

On behalf of the entire Peace Corps community, I would like to thank Sargent Shriver for his tireless work and advocacy for Peace Corps as well as celebrate his commitment to crafting public service opportunities. Since 1961, more than 200,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers in over 130 countries worldwide.
