More Than 500 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers to Convene in San Diego This Weekend

SAN DIEGO, July 9, 1997—More than 500 returned Peace Corps volunteers from across the country will be in San Diego this weekend for a four-day conference, including a day of volunteer service on Saturday.
Peace Corps Director Mark Gearan, former director of communications for President Clinton, and Deputy Director Charles Baquet will be among the top Peace Corps staff to attend the July 10-13 conference.
Director Gearan, Deputy Director Baquet and others are available for media interviews.

Currently, about 6,500 Peace Corps volunteers are working in 87 countries in the areas of business, education, the nvironment, health and nutrition and agriculture. Since President John F. Kennedy founded Peace Corps in 1961, more than 150,000 Americans have joined the Peace Corps, serving in 132 countries.
