Washington, D.C., May 19, 1999—Peace Corps Director Mark Gearan announced today the appointment of Doug Greene to be the agency\'s new chief information officer.
Greene, 39, a Dallas, Tex. native who lives in Kensington, Md., was previously the Peace Corps\' chief of field assistance. He also served as the Peace Corps country director in Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, from 1996-1997. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Marshall Islands from 1982-1985.
"Doug brings a unique blend of solid management experience, expertise in information technology, and exceptional interpersonal skills to this position," said Gearan. "I am confident that Doug will continue to display outstanding leadership in directing the agency\'s critical information technology and management efforts."
In addition to his work for the Peace Corps, Greene held several positions with Catholic Relief Services, both overseas and in Baltimore, from 1988-1996. These included country representative in Haiti and Cameroon, director of U.S. government relations, acting director of telecommunications, project manager in the Office of Information Systems, and regional computer coordinator in southeast Asia. In 1982, Greene earned his bachelor\'s degree in history from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore. He received his master\'s degree in development management from American University\'s School of International Service in 1988. Currently, nearly 6,700 Peace Corps volunteers are working in 78 countries in education, the environment, health and nutrition, business advising, and community development. Since 1961, more than 150,000 Americans have joined the Peace Corps.
