Country Director's Welcome for Zambia

Welcome to Peace Corps Zambia! If you are considering volunteering in Zambia, we would love you to join us in a country where Volunteers are contributing meaningfully to the development efforts of their host communities while at the same time making lifelong friends and connections that enrich their lives. I encourage you to commit to this life-expanding service journey and discover the transformative power of Peace Corps service in Zambia.

One of the three largest Peace Corps posts before the worldwide evacuation of Volunteers due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Zambia proudly welcomed the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers to return to in-country service in 2022! Among them were Volunteers who had been evacuated in 2020 and returned after two years away. We also received new two-year Volunteers in the Agriculture, Environment, Education, and Health sectors, as well as Peace Corps Response Volunteers who came to join our PEPFAR-funded public health program called “Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, SAFE,” or DREAMS.

In 2023 we continued to expand our partnerships, posting Volunteers for the first time in Western Province, the last remaining region of this vast country where we had not had a consistent presence.

Peace Corps Zambia boasts a caring, highly skilled, and incredibly hardworking staff. We also rely on the steadfast partnership and support of the government of Zambia, the U.S. Embassy, and especially local counterparts and resource families, traditional leaders, and rural communities throughout the country. Zambia staff and Volunteers are focused on programs that promote good health and sound education, with an emphasis on gender equity, food security, and economic empowerment; a safe and sustainable environment; and a peaceful existence among all human beings. It is easy to find inspiration in the work that supports these goals in Zambia.

In addition to the Peace Corps service opportunity, Zambia offers a peaceful society, beautiful vistas, vast floodplains, rich traditional festivals, some of the continent’s richest game reserves, the source point of the 3,500 km-long Zambezi River, and of course Mosi-oa-Tunya—"The Smoke that Thunders," known worldwide as Victoria Falls, one of the world’s seven natural wonders!

Volunteers in Zambia have a deep Peace Corps experience as they live and work side by side with their community members in mostly rural settings. The daily experience for Volunteers here is not always easy. But with patience and trust in the value of the impact they’re making, Zambia Volunteers find growth and great satisfaction, being mindful of the small achievements, the friendships built, and the good feelings imparted. These things add up over time and contribute to Peace Corps’ global mission to promote world peace and friendship.

In Zambia, Volunteers have an opportunity to create a positive impact on organizations, institutions, communities, and individuals. While those impacts sometimes may seem modest, and often are just person to person, the impact on people can be profound and have deep, lifelong meaning. While it can be challenging to join a new community, over time you will come to think of your Zambian community as home, and begin to develop a unique personal experience that is a hallmark of Peace Corps service.

If you are considering Peace Corps service, we hope you will serve in Zambia. One African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,” and Peace Corps Zambia is living proof of the wisdom of those words.

Many Volunteers fall in love with Zambia, and chances are you will, too!
