Project Description

In Mongolia, diseases associated with lifestyle choices such as poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking, and substance use are increasing rapidly among the Mongolian people including adolescents. Peace Corps Mongolia seeks Volunteers to work with youth in the areas of healthy lifestyles and life skills in order to promote awareness and behavior changes around 1) healthy nutrition and exercise; 2) preventing alcohol, tobacco and substance use; and 3) sexual and reproductive health. In addition, Volunteers will build the capacity of youth through clubs, mentoring programs, and service learning projects to improve self-confidence, positive communication, and leadership skills.

Health Education Volunteers are assigned to work with local secondary schools or vocational schools and work with homeroom teachers, school doctors, biology teachers, physical education teachers and other school and health professionals to implement the Ministry of Education’s core education curriculum and the Ministry of Health’s strategies that focus on healthy life styles for youth. In addition to educating on basic healthy life style topics such as nutrition, physical fitness, sexual reproductive health and avoidance of alcohol and tobacco use, Health Volunteers teach life skills. Life skills education is a comprehensive positive behavior change approach, which concentrates on the development of life skills including communication, decision-making, critical thinking, managing emotions, assertiveness, self-esteem building, resisting peer pressure, and relationship skills.

The Health Education project is designed to focus on youth and to support the Mongolian government's priority to improve health education for youth. Volunteers will co-teach with Mongolian professionals using Mongolian language to educate students of various ages.

Professionalism, dedication, persistence, resiliency, the understanding of Peace Corps’ accountability to its national partners (Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Labor), flexibility, and respect for the Mongolian culture are the primary attributes needed to be a successful Volunteer in Mongolia. If you want to assist Mongolian youth to become more responsible for their own well-being and if you have a sense of dedication and persistence to continue working, even when progress seems to be a distant goal, we have a place for you in Mongolia and welcome you to join our Health Education team!
