St Catherine University - Henrietta Schmoll School of Health

Why you should consider this program

Holistic health crosses borders, disciplines, time, religions and ways of knowing and healing to benefit individuals, communities and the environment.  Students in the MAHS program share a broad view of health and healing to include the mind, body, spirit, culture, community and the environment.  They know that an imbalance in one area of their lives or the life of their community affects all other areas.  They are aware and attentive to social injustices and lend a strong voice to create balance in the world. They tend to be people who see opportunities for change rather than barriers.  They value connection, process and empowerment.

The pedagogy of the MAHS program is based on transformational, feminist and social justice learning theories. Students experience classroom learning, research, hands-on exploration and engagement with the community. Successful students are ones who can engage in a variety of learning opportunities and are open to the possibilities of transformation and healing in the learning process.  As a transdisciplinary program the MAHS program’s pedagogy transcends disciplines by drawing from a variety of disciplines.  The curriculum promotes the interweaving of action/reflection and theory/practice.  Instructors embrace the knowledge students have acquired from their life path and previous studies. Successful students bring their experience into the classroom and their classroom learning back to the practical applications of their lives.

The required internship for the Fellows program will fulfill requirements for one of the courses in the MAHS program- the Practicum/Integrative Seminar.  Throughout the graduate program, students will have opportunities to engage with community projects and assignments that will address various lenses on institutional injustices and inequalities such as food justice and environmental justice, while examining alternative models for food, health, and healing.

This Practicum course builds on that graduate curriculum and provides the student the opportunity to apply holistic health methods in a community setting working with underserved populations.  The student integrates learning in the MAHS program with specific fields of work or uses it to expand in new directions through an 80-hour practicum and 24 hours of a classroom seminar.

Students have the opportunity to be engaged in community-based learning in a practicum setting of their own choice. Students exhibit leadership by working collaboratively with the setting to design goals that jointly meet the needs of the student and the community facility.

This course also encourages students to engage their body, mind and spirit in pursuit of professional and personal goals. As students complete the program, they take practical steps to integrate knowledge gained from the program, the practicum experience and your own professional background.

Jobs for program alumni

Within 6 months after graduation approximately 95% of students are engaged in the field of Holistic Health or are integrating holistic health philosophies and principles into their work setting.  The MAHS is an interprofessional program which draws from diverse disciplines including about 50% from a clinical background.  The rest come from and return to fields as diverse as the arts, business, education, non-profits, fitness industry, corporate business settings, political action, and social services.  Several students are self-employed in the field of Holistic Health.  Some of the careers our graduates are pursuing include: energy healer, integrative nurse, lobbyist, nutrition consultant, yoga instructor, coach, social worker, academic researcher, addiction and recovery counselor, Chinese medicine specialist, author and chaplain.
