Science Lab Training Coordinator

Before You Apply

Peace Corps Response positions are open to returned Volunteers or U.S. citizens with significant professional and technical experience.

Project Description

A Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) is needed to serve as a Science Lab Training Coordinator for the School System of the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia in Liberia. Since 1974, Liberian students have only been allowed to sit the theory portion of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) science exam because of the absence of laboratories. In order to be accepted as a full member of WAEC, Liberia has decided to move to the full exam. However, the challenge of not having laboratories and trained educators to be able to set up laboratories and develop simple experiments still means that Liberian students will not be able to full gain success in the sciences. Therefore, there is a compelling need for a PCRV who could help set up laboratories, develop simple and inexpensive experiments, and train Peace Corps Volunteers and their host country counterparts.

The Science Lab Training Coordinator, with at least three of classroom teaching experience and experience with science lab training/teaching in low resource environment is needed to organize training sessions for the science teachers of the 27 schools of the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia and help set up science laboratories in the schools. The PCRV will also train Peace Corps Volunteers and their counterparts in science lab techniques and how to prepare students for the lab science portion of the WASSEC exam. The overall goal of this assignment is to build the capacity of Liberia’s education sector by training science teachers and providing for the development of science laboratories in the schools.

Please note that this position is one of several that will depart for service in Liberia at the same time. It is unlikely that the departure date will change but applicants will be notified if the date does change. Please only apply if you are available on the date listed and if you can serve for the entire duration of the project.
