Project Description

A Peace Corps Response Volunteer is needed to serve as a Rice Production and Agricultural Entrepreneurship Specialist with the Organization for Sustainable Development, Reinforcement, and Self-Promotion of Community Structures (DEDRAS-ONG) in the rural areas of the municipality of Djougou and Ouaké, Benin. In general, the rural communities in this part of Benin are recurring victims of the effects of climate change (late or torrential rain, floods); which leads to a reduction of their income and precarious living conditions for rural households. Having a specialized Volunteer who is knowledgeable about rice production to support the project team in identifying innovative solutions is critically important as this will help producers and households to be more resilient to climate change.

A Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in agronomy or a related field focusing on vegetable production, experience in agricultural entrepreneurship, and intermediate French proficiency is needed to develop and support improved technologies for rice production. The PCRV is expected to develop extension tools to facilitate the adoption of improved production techniques to increase yields and train the project team on new and improved production technologies as well as design new learning and knowledge dissemination tools. The PCRV will also develop action steps for research and timely response within the context of climate change resilience and support the development of institutional memory regarding agricultural best practices and experiences.

Please note that departure dates and other details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations. Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Benin together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
