Project Description

Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRV) are needed to serve in the role of Primary School Literacy Co-Teacher & Teacher Trainer for the Ministry of Education at primary schools in Liberia. The Peace Corps Education Project supports Liberia’s education sector during a time of reconstruction as the country aims to meet the nation’s educational challenges and help ensure every Liberian child has access to and obtain a quality education. Ninety-five percent of Liberian students are considered ‘over-age’ for their respective grade level. Students in Primary school will range in age from 5 to 15, in classrooms that range between 30 to 90 students in each class with very limited teaching resources. The assistance of the PCRVs has been requested support primary schools through teacher training and co-teaching 1st to 3rd grades basic phonics, reading comprehension, and building critical thinking skills.

The Primary School Literacy Co-Teachers & Teacher Trainers are needed to teach students through direct classroom instruction and co-teaching with another Liberian teacher at the same school. The PCRV will also be expected to be involved with teacher training, mentoring, coaching and building critical thinking skills for teachers. This will involve conducting cluster teacher training, watching teachers teach and giving feedback. The overall goal of this assignment is to build the capacity of Liberian teachers and support their primary schools to provide effective literacy education.

Please note that departure dates and other details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations. Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Liberia together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.

Required Skills

• High tolerance for ambiguity and high level of flexibility – some details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations
Competitive candidates will have one or more of the following criteria:
• Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in Preschool, Early Childhood, Middle School, or Elementary Education
• Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline with Elementary Education state certification
• Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline with 1 or more school year classroom teaching experience at the Early Childhood, Middle School, or Elementary level. Full time Montessori teaching experience is also acceptable.
• Or 2-year Peace Corps service as a Literacy Volunteer
