Project Description

A Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) is needed to serve as a Math Support Officer at the Curriculum Unit with the Ministry of Education in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Over the years, concerns have been raised about the low performance in maths throughout primary schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Ministry of Education has responded by providing higher education and on-going professional development training for classroom practitioners in maths education and appropriate graded level instructional materials. Despite the attention given to maths, students’ achievement is still below the targeted standards. Broadly, this project aims to improve teaching of maths in schools. Ultimately, it is expected that participating primary and lower secondary school students would perform at the appropriate grade level and struggling students would improve by at least two grade levels. Several activities are earmarked to meet this objective. The project would provide training for teachers in delivering the maths programme. Another key outcome would be to support teachers in identifying as well as creating appropriate teaching/ learning resources, both online and otherwise, to enhance student achievement. Finally teachers would improve their skills / efficiency in record keeping and data management.

A Math Support Officer, with an advanced degree in an education-related field and at least 5 years’ experience as a primary school teacher, math teacher, or administrator, is needed to work in collaboration with Education Officers to support schools earmarked for the project. The PCRV will develop appropriate training plans, implement the trainings, and identify or create appropriate teaching and learning resources that would enhance lesson planning and lesson delivery. The PCRV will also conduct site visits to participating schools, evaluate students’ levels and learning needs related to numeracy, create and direct instructional intervention plans for students, and monitor and evaluate the progress of both teachers and students at the schools. The goal of this assignment is to build the capacity of the teachers to identify and address their students’ mathematics learning needs.

Required Skills

• Master’s Degree in Math or a similar education-related field
• 5+ years’ experience as a successful primary school teacher, math teacher or administrator
• A valid teaching license/certification
• Experience in ICT integration in Education
• Experience developing and/or conducting education related training sessions
