Project Description

A Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) is needed to serve as a Marketing and Resource Mobilization Specialist for the Eswatini National Youth Cooperative Alliance (ESNYCA) in the Kingdom of Eswatini. ESNYCA is a youth cooperative alliance championing increased socio-economic participation of youth in Eswatini by 2030. It is an apex body for all youth cooperative activities in the country and coordinates activities among its affiliates. Eswatini is faced with youth unemployment, so youth cooperatives offer another solution since the cooperative philosophy brings in additional and diverse business models to engage young people. The organization offers general business support, management training, and product promotion support, among other services. A generational divide exists between the younger and older generations leading to difficulty with the integration of youth into the cooperative movement. Young people see cooperatives as outdated or do not perceive them as viable job options. Youth who have integrated into cooperatives face vertical mobility and representation barriers. The older generation perceives young people as competition, or as lacking commitment. In order to bridge this gap, there is a great need to reach out to the youth and parents to educate them about the benefits of working together in a group effort to fight poverty and improve the country’s economic status. Resources are needed and a clear communication and resource mobilization strategy needs to be in place for the organization to effectively execute its goal.

A Marketing and Resource Mobilization Specialist, with at least a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field and three years’ experience in marketing and resource mobilization, is needed to play a vital role in the development of the key documents needed to empower young people to improve their socio-economic status and scout for resources to drive the day-to-day operations of the organization. The PCRV will develop a communication, marketing and branding strategy for the ESNYCA, work with staff to design and set up a website and social media accounts for the organization and train staff on how to manage these accounts, and participate in developing Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials. The Volunteer will also provide guidance to staff to design initiatives to expand ESNYCA’s current donor base, develop concept notes, proposals and budgets which drive the achievement of ESNYCA’s strategic plan, and support the development and presentation of proposals to potential donors and partners. The goal of this assignment is to strengthen ESNYCA’s capacity to engage various stakeholders and support continued projects and initiatives.

Please note that departure dates and other details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations. Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in eSwatini together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
