Peace Corps Response positions are open to returned Volunteers or U.S. citizens with significant professional and technical experience.
The Literacy Coordinator, with a Bachelor’s degree in early education and at least two years’ experience in teaching at an elementary school, will be placed at a government school that has both elementary and middle schools. The Response Volunteer will be asked to do a combination of duties, including co-teaching lower grades phonics and literacy, and leading teacher trainings and afterschool literacy activities. In addition, the Literacy Teacher Trainer will co-develop and co-implement a participatory inventory and analysis of Liberia’s literacy programs for primary and middle grades. The goal of this assignment is for the Response Volunteer to report on the successes and challenges of their literacy assignment in order to help Peace Corps Liberia study the efficacy of this literacy movement.
Please note that candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Liberia together as a group, so the departure date is not flexible. It is unlikely that the departure date will change but applicants will be notified if the date does change. • 2-5 years’ experience teaching elementary school
• Experience in teaching ESOL and/or Literacy
• Ability to adapt to and work in a very low-resource environment, including very limited transportation, internet access, and other amenities
