Before You Apply

Peace Corps Response positions are open to returned Volunteers or U.S. citizens with significant professional and technical experience.

Project Description

Two Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) are needed to serve as English for Specific Purposes Curriculum and Materials Design Specialists with the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education. The PCRVs will be supporting the implementation of the current English curriculum reform through material design and curriculum development for technical high schools. The Ministry of Public Education is now going through the process of redesigning the curriculum for technical high school programs emphasizing the communicative approach to learning, taking into account the standards established in both the National Qualifications Framework and the Common European Framework. Each PCRV will be working under the same curriculum development project, and each will be focused on one of two sets of subjects: Agriculture, Drawing and Design, Secretarial Management and Hospitality; or Accounting, Banking and Finance, Computer Science, Mechanics, and Electronics. The goal of this curriculum reform is to develop students' English proficiency according to the labor market standards in each field of study.

Volunteers with a Master’s Degree in Education, experience with English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs, and at least 2 years of experience working with curriculum design are needed to work with the ministry to further develop the technical education curriculum. Each PCRV will coordinate with the National English Advisors, a specialized team of English teachers, Regional English Advisors and Peace Corps Volunteers to support the English curriculum development for the different vocational specialties. The PCRVs will coordinate the development of the new English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum and develop materials and resources for each program (tenth, eleventh, twelfth grades) according to the field of study. These materials include audio, video, tool kits, resource kits and scripts, for several resources and projects. The goal of this assignment is to continue to strengthen the technical education curriculum and further the implementation of the curriculum throughout Costa Rican technical high schools.
