Project Description

Two Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) are needed to serve as a Deaf Education Specialists at the High School for the Deaf in the Kingdom of Eswatini. Until 2008, Deaf education in Eswatini had been limited to primary education at the Siteki Primary School for the Deaf. Government has made significant strides by building the High School for the Deaf in Matsetsa. Amidst challenges the school has made great improvements to be where it is today, however there is a dire need to strengthen English literacy among Deaf students in particular and the Deaf people of Eswatini in general. Although Swazi Sign Language is the primary mode of communication, teaching and learning, English Language is used in reading and writing and most Deaf students have challenges with this area. There is a need to train teachers on best practices in teaching and improving the English literacy of Deaf students and to motivate them to learn to read and write. The School for the Deaf seeks to improve the students’ experience, learning and lives and the improvement in English literacy can open doors for them to further their education and be the best they can be.

Two Deaf Education Specialists, with at least a degree in Deaf education and 3 years’ experience in a Deaf education, are needed to focus on building local capacity of teachers and students at the School for the Deaf - to improve the English Literacy of Deaf children. The PCRVs will train teachers a particular reading and writing program geared to address Deaf and hard of hearing students’ to read and write English Language confidently via the use of Swazi Sign Language as the primary modality of instruction. The volunteers will also write a guideline that could be used as a procedure to teach these students reading and writing English via the use of Swazi Sign Language, develop lesson plans that will be video recorded to keep in the library for revision and future learning, and liaise with the Special Education Unit in the Ministry of Education and the National Curriculum Centre on program development procedures in Eswatini. The goal of this assignment is to strengthen the school’s capacity to meet the needs of its Deaf students, as well as build the skills of the school’s teachers.

Please note that departure dates and other details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations. Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in eSwatini together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.

Required Skills

• High tolerance for ambiguity and high level of flexibility – some details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations
• Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Education
• At least 3- 5 years’ experience of working and teaching in a bilingual environment in a Deaf setting
• Must be able to assess, report and plan for individualized needs of Deaf learners
• Demonstrated professional background and experience in facilitating and training for a bilingual visual modality environment.
• Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language and demonstrated ability to teach in a Sign Language environment.
• PCRV will be required and expected to learn Swazi Sign Language
