Three Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) are needed to serve as TEFL Teacher Trainers for Rwanda Education Board (REB) and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs). English language is becoming a vital channel of communication to link Rwanda to the world. It is formally learned in schools where TTCs play the chief role in elementary education in particular and in other education levels in general. Due to the fact that English has newly been introduced in Rwanda as the language of instruction, both teachers and learners can benefit greatly from a native English speaker with teaching skills who would help them acquire English language and English teaching skills. There are 16 TTCs in Rwanda whose mission is to train primary school teachers. As English language is an instructional language medium in Rwanda education, TTCs’ purpose includes strengthening communication in English through daily school lessons, English clubs, use of English in extra-curricular activities, etc. It is in this regards that the TTCs mentioned above have requested Peace Corps Response Volunteers.
A PCRV with a Bachelor’s degree in English, TEFL, education or related field will help teach English to student teachers and develop their teaching skills. The Volunteer will train both in-service and pre-service teachers on teaching methodology in assigned TTC and their demonstration schools. Additionally, the PCRV will teach and mentor teachers and tutors using lessons focused on communication skills. The PCRV will organize English clubs and debates in assigned TTC and demonstration schools. The goal of this assignment is to improve the overall English learning culture, English speaking and listening skills of students and teachers at TTCs.
Please note that departure dates and other details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations. Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Rwanda together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
Rwanda Education Board (REB)/Teacher Training College (TTCs)

• Bachelor’s degree with specialization in English, TEFL/TESOL, education, or any other related field;
• Two years’ experience teaching English as a foreign/second language, preferably in Africa;
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others;
• Demonstrated problem solving skills and innovation;
• Demonstrated success working with limited resources in a multicultural environment;
• Demonstrated spirit of integrity.
