Solid Waste Management Program Expert
Project Description
The Valencia Local Government Unit (LGU) has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to assist the LGU with its waste management program. One of the challenges that the Municipal Local Government Unit is facing is to implement an effective and efficient solid waste management program for the whole town. The volume of waste in the dumpsite had considerably increased in past several years and was eventually advised by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for closure in the third quarter of 2019. The municipality has a new existing controlled dumpsite, and it is currently using the mechanized sorting, rapid composting, pulverizing and shredding of the residual waste to mitigate the piling up of waste and still finding ways and alternative methods in handling the generated wastes to lessen the impact on its central Material Recovery Facility.
The PCRV will work in close collaboration with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer and the Municipal Planning and Development Officer to support the municipality's 10-Year Solid Waste Management Plan (2020-2029). Parallel with the implementation of the plan, increased SWM activities will be undertaken in the municipality such as anti-littering on both open and covered public places, mandatory segregation at source in every barangays, for their clean and green program with community stakeholders. The overall goal of the assignment is to support the updated 10-year SWM plan that will respond to the challenges of climate change and serve as a benchmark for further developmental programs on solid waste management for LGU-Valencia.
