4 tips to craft an outstanding resume for your Peace Corps Response Volunteer application
Are you interested in serving with Peace Corps Response and want to make your resume stand out? Here are four tips to help you build a competitive resume that shows you have the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) assignment.
1.Tailor your resume to the position
When we review resumes, we look for how well the applicant meets the required skills listed in the position description. Take time to ensure your resume specifically details the way your education and experience align with the required knowledge, skills, experience, and credentials the position requires. Do you have a license or other specialized certification? Be sure to note that. If you are applying for more than one position, customize your resume to each position.
2. Show that you meet the Required Skills
The requesting partner organization sets the minimum education and experience needed for the position. These details are included in the Required Skills section of the position description. If a resume does not meet these minimum requirements, we may not be able to consider the applicant for the position. Showing how you meet the required skills in your resume allows us to consider your application. If you are able to highlight how you exceed the minimum qualifications, it will help your resume stand out.
3. Demonstrate your impact
In order to have long-lasting impact during short-term assignments, PCRVs hit the ground running. Your resume should include information about how you have created impact in your previous work experience. Use action verbs to describe the role you took in the context of the broader project or workplace. Specify how that resulted in a beneficial outcome. This will help us understand what you bring to a PCRV assignment. For example, if you are a teacher, instead of saying “Taught fifth grade mathematics,” tell us “Developed and implemented an annual mathematics curriculum for 150 fifth grade students, which resulted in 85% achievement of grade-level competencies.”
4. Make your resume clear and detailed
Recruiters review a lot of applications, so it’s important to make your resume stand out by showing clearly and distinctly that you meet the required qualifications. List your education and relevant work experience — including the dates you worked, the job title, and the number of hours worked per week for each position. Your resume should be about two to five pages long. You do not need to include hobbies, an objective statement, or references (references are requested at a later stage of the process). Do not include family information, personal photos, or other personal information besides your contact information.
It’s important to keep in mind that Peace Corps Response positions are competitive, and we often receive several qualified applicants for each position. Candidates may apply to up to three Peace Corps Response Volunteer positions and one two-year Volunteer position at the same time.
