Youth and Young Adult Resource Program VISTA | Volunteer Memphis
City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA
About the organization
The City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA Team is a group of AmeriCorps VISTAs coordinated by the City of Memphis. Our mission is to strengthen organizations that alleviate poverty through volunteering and the mobilization of resources. We work throughout Memphis to end poverty through capacity building and innovation. Our team is part of a nationwide program sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, that engages over 5,000 people in service with AmeriCorps VISTA every year. Our members have been retired persons, mid-life career changers, recent graduates, and everything in between.
We tackle poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations throughout Memphis. City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA Members expand economic & affordable housing opportunities and increase workforce development in economically disadvantaged communities.
The goal is to build capacity and sustainable solutions for Volunteer Memphis. Volunteer Memphis support community partners with volunteer recruitment and management for education, anti-poverty initiatives, veterans and their families. Our community partners service at-risk families across the Mid-South. In collaboration with Volunteer Memphis Director, the VISTA will serve to build an infrastructure and develop, compliance, and outreach strategies to grow the scope and impact of the Volunteer Memphis service partners that support the economic development of their clients’ education and anti-poverty initiatives. The VISTA will create and coordinate events and projects that address the service requirement needs of youth and young adults as it relates to meeting the minimum requirements for college, trade school or the military.
Develop a firm knowledge base of Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis and their role in the community in preparation to improve upon and expand Volunteer Memphis to understand the role they play as it relates to the entire organization. VISTA will engage in orientation/training to develop a fuller understanding of the layout of Leadership Memphis/Volunteer Memphis initiatives/services and department and get situated in the workspace. This orientation/training will be conducted by staff. The VISTA will develop the program to recruit, place and track the hours of the youth and young adults requiring service hours for future goals.
