WiderNet is a Durham, NC non-profit that, for 20 years, has been dedicated to improving digital education and communications for all communities and individuals around the world.

Affiliated with the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we provide resources, coaching, training, computers and educational materials to schools, clinics, libraries and homes in underserved areas of the world.

We develop and distribute the eGranary Digital Library, a plug-and-play server that provides instant access to millions of digital educational documents without the need of a connection to the Internet. It has been adopted at over 2,000 locations worldwide.

We also produce the Corrections Off-Line Education Platform (COEP), a special version of the eGranary for correctional institutions that is in over 30 U.S. prisons.

Duties

Executive Director to act as the Chief Executive Officer, responsible for the overall vision, leadership and management, direction, program execution, and achievement of objectives. The Executive Director works under the general oversight of the Board of Directors.

For 20 years WiderNet has improved digital education and communications for communities and individuals around the world that lack Internet connectivity. We provide resources, coaching, training, computers and educational materials to schools, clinics, libraries and homes in under-served areas of the world.

We develop and distribute the eGranary Digital Library, a plug-and-play server that provides instant access to thousands of Web sites without the need of a connection to the Internet. It has been adopted at over 2,000 locations worldwide.

We also produce the Corrections Off-Line Education Platform (COEP), a special version of the eGranary for correctional institutions that is in over 30 U.S. prisons.

Qualifications

Required Professional Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree · A familiarity with the situation of poor and marginalized people • Experience traveling and living in developing countries • Transparent and high-integrity leadership · Three or more years senior nonprofit management experience · Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting · Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation · Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff · Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector · Ability to elucidate WiderNet’s strategic vision to staff, board, volunteers, donors, and the general public · Strong written and oral communication skills · Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups · Strong public speaking ability

Desired Professional Qualifications: A demonstrated interest in librarianship and/or education · An understanding of appropriate technology · Experience working in prisons · Hands-on experience with IT and innovative uses of technology.
