Volunteer Teacher

The Washington English Center

About the organization

Washington English Center (WEC) is a non-profit, community-based organization that prepares volunteer teachers and tutors to provide high-quality educational services and life-skills programs to all adult immigrants and refugees in the Washington metropolitan area, as well nationally due to our shift to operations online in addition to in-person classes.

In-person and online teachers provide groups of students with integrated ESOL lessons in physical classrooms, covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation, all through the guiding structure of a print textbook. While students come to class multiple times a week, we ask volunteers to commit to only one day a week (1-2 hours) during each 11-week term.
Duties are as follow:
Participate in at least one teacher training workshop per term over Zoom (~60-90 minutes)
Follow an e-textbook and syllabus provided by WEC
Spend 30 minutes to 1 hour per week lesson planning, in coordination with their co-teacher
Co-teach over Zoom using an e-textbook once a week for two hours
Take attendance and send a short email summary of each class to the members of the teaching team (volunteers who teach the same students on different days).

At least 18 years of age
Proficient in English
Desire to work with adult learners
Able to make an 11-week teaching OR tutoring commitment (one day a week)
