About the organization

Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to teach English to immigrants and refugees! Join our community of over 350 volunteers to teach either online or in person in downtown DC. No prior experience is required, as you will be paired with a co-teacher and receive support from our staff. You can also sign up to be an online conversation or writing tutor. WEC serves several hundred adult language learners, including many recently resettled refugees from Afghanistan. As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to be exposed to new cultures, attend free teacher trainings, and meet like minded people at volunteer socials throughout the term.Group classes start April 18, but tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis!


1.Participate in at least one teacher training workshop per term over Zoom (~60-90 minutes)
2. Follow an e-textbook and syllabus provided by WEC
3. Spend 30 minutes to 1 hour per week lesson planning, in coordination with their co-teacher
4. Co-teach over Zoom using an e-textbook once a week for two hours
5. Take attendance and send a short email summary of each class to the members of the teaching team (volunteers who teach the same students on different days).


✓ be 18 years old or older
✓ be a proficient English speaker (non-native speakers welcome)
✓ make an 11-week teaching OR tutoring commitment (one day a week)
✓ attend training before each session
✓ have regular access to email
✓ have the desire to work with adults from different cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds
