About the organization

The Virginia Capacity Building Project is an AmeriCorps VISTA project dedicated to strengthening access to social services across the Commonwealth, with the ultimate goal of combatting poverty and ensuring healthy futures for those we serve. Based out of the Virginia Department of Social Services, we are placing full-time National Service Members with six offices and projects around VDSS. Our team will be addressing a wide variety of topics, including: expanding access to affordable childcare; providing resources to address Substance Use Disorder; pursuing a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive service landscape; furthering the goals of food security and good nutrition for all; and many more.

Duties

This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position. AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program dedicated to ending poverty through capacity building initiatives with community partners. You can read more about AmeriCorps VISTA at https://americorps.gov/serve/fit-finder/americorps-vista.

The VISTA Member will serve at the Virginia Service Commission to promote service and volunteerism through the Volunteer Center Network. To accomplish this, the VISTA member will coordinate with the State Volunteer Center Network in order to determine the status of current capacity and resources across the State. This will include geographic coverage (regional demographics, population served), programmatic offerings (programs, trainings, affiliations with key stakeholder groups, and operational health (funding sources, organizational structure, technology platform, partners). The VISTA Member will conduct research to identify reciprocal and aligned State Commission to Volunteer Center Network relationships nationwide, national funding models to support programming and alignment, best practice frameworks for collecting nonprofit and volunteer data.

Qualifications

This is designed to be an entry-level position. No prior experience is required, but previous involvement with volunteer work or social services is preferred. Strong communication, research, and organizational skills are required.

AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a living stipend, healthcare benefits, and childcare assistance. They are also eligible for a relocation allowance where applicable. Upon successfully completing their year of service, members are eligible for an Education Award or Cash Stipend bonus, as well as one full year of Non-Competitive Eligibility for federal employment. VISTA members will also receive training and professional development opportunities throughout their year of service.

$13,800 (annually)
