Veteran Services Coordinator VISTA | Shelby County Government
City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA
About the organization
The City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA Team is a group of AmeriCorps VISTAs coordinated by the City of Memphis. Our mission is to strengthen organizations that alleviate poverty through volunteering and the mobilization of resources. We work throughout Memphis to end poverty through capacity building and innovation. Our team is part of a nationwide program sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, that engages over 5,000 people in service with AmeriCorps VISTA every year. Our members have been retired persons, mid-life career changers, recent graduates, and everything in between.
We tackle poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations throughout Memphis. City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA Members expand economic & affordable housing opportunities and increase workforce development in economically disadvantaged communities.
The goal of the project is to expand capacity and create sustainable solutions for the veterans and their families in Shelby County toward the goal of increasing economic opportunity and viability. The Veterans Services Office serves the 77,000 veterans in this area, with programming aimed at improving economic and overall well-being. Our community partners also serve veterans and military families with anti-poverty initiatives. The VISTA Volunteer will expand capacity and build an infrastructure for 1) benefits claims filing, 2) program development, 3) coordinated veterans support and 4) community outreach.
Develop a comprehensive knowledge base of the veterans’ community and its needs, as well as the Veterans Services Office, in preparation to improve and expand upon the Veterans Services Offices and community partners’ operations, programming, coordination of services, outreach and performance management. Conduct a needs survey of local veterans’ services and identify service needs and gaps, then develop a resource guide of existing services, as well as a formal strategy, with timelines, resources and costs, to address service gaps. Promote efforts within the veteran community to provide coordinated and more comprehensive efforts to meet the needs of veterans and their families. Build capacity and support sustainability for the Veterans Services Office and community partners to obtain more and better outcomes from provided services.
