Urban Roots Food & Farming Education VISTA

Urban Roots

About the organization

Urban Roots transforms the lives of young people by giving them leadership opportunities on our urban farm while growing food for the community. Come research, design develop, and pilot the next generation of hands-on food and farming based educational programs at Urban Roots. You will lead the project to deepen and develop partnerships with schools and school districts and create a new set of programs including field trips, after-school activities, and camps. These programs will be grounded in hands-on, project-based activities for K-12 students that take advantage of the unique and exciting educational opportunities found in growing and eating food. Urban Roots is currently the only farm in Austin offering educational farm tours to K-12 students. By expanding our capacity for educational tours and other school programs, Urban Roots can help meet a need for more free educational field trips in Austin and its surrounding areas.

The Urban Roots Food & Farming Educational Programs VISTA will conduct program research, including calling, emailing, interviewing, touring, and reading about other food and farming based educational programs in Central Texas and nationally, and compiling findings into a series of easy to reference documents and spreadsheets. Identifying and contacting potential client partners like schools and other youth serving organizations to identify their needs and desires for educational programming. Program design, including writing curriculum, instructor guides and reference materials, program processes and guidebooks, and creating program overviews, calendars, logic models, and evaluation plans. Program planning, including outreach and communication with school and non-profit partners to increase participation in programming and gather feedback.
