The Department of Environmental Health Sciences is the home of a NIOSH-funded Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering (COHSE), an NIEHS-funded Environmental Toxicology and Epidemiology Training Grant (ETEP), an NIEHS-funded Michigan Center on Lifestage Environmental Exposures and Disease (M-LEEaD), an NIH-funded Fogarty Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) hub, and an ABET-accredited Industrial Hygiene Program, in addition to numerous investigator-initiated research projects funded by governmental agencies, foundations, and private sector institutions. The Department offers Ph.D., MS, and MPH degree programs and participates in the school-wide undergraduate and online MPH degree programs.


The School of Public Health at the University of Michigan (U-M), Ann Arbor, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS). Applications from individuals with interests and expertise in all areas of environmental health sciences will be considered.

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences at U-M is engaged in a broad range of research in environmental and occupational exposure science, toxicology, environmental/atmospheric chemistry, microbiology, epidemiology, and global health.

Areas of research interest include exposure science, broadly defined and applied to chemicals encountered in occupational or environmental settings; methodologies for characterizing risks to emerging chemical hazards, particularly among vulnerable populations; innovative technologies for assessing simultaneous exposures to multiple agents and consequent biological impacts; data science; and “omics” approaches relating chronic human diseases to endogenous and exogenous factors via analyses of biomarkers and mechanistic pathways.

Areas of teaching interest include lecture and/or laboratory courses in occupational health or any of the other research interest areas listed above.

Required Qualifications include a doctoral degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline; a strong commitment to teaching excellence and mentorship; the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines; and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications include a record of peer-reviewed publications; post-doctoral experience in an academic or other research setting; prior teaching experience; and evidence of, or the strong potential for, obtaining competitive research funding.


The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong, extramurally funded independent research program; collaborate with faculty colleagues; develop and teach graduate-level and possibly undergraduate-level courses; mentor graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in research; and contribute to the diversity of scholarly activities within the department, school, and university.
