Since 1959, the faculty, students, and staff at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) have advanced scientific knowledge to help solve pressing environmental challenges and improve human health and welfare.
With more than 400 employees, over 300 projects on all seven continents, and two world-class research campuses in Reno and Las Vegas, DRI serves as one of the eight institutions in the Nevada System of Higher Education.
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is a world-renowned science center, with an education department that translates faculty research for public engagement. In DRI’s Office of Education, Nevada Robotics and Stories in the Snow programs are recruiting a STEM Education Outreach AmeriCorps Member for the Reno, Nevada campus. This member will be an essential leader of the team to help meet the needs of students and educators in Nevada. This person will help to expand the reach and access of a non-profit program for rural and Title I schools in Nevada and the Tahoe Region of California. The member will work with a team to implement projects that increase STEM awareness within the surrounding community by sharing STEM content, expanding communications, and providing virtual and/or in-classroom support for educators. Frequent travel, community engagement, and virtual teaching for both students and adults will be required for projects including: citizen science, family STEM nights, STEM teaching, and educator training. The member’s creativity and knowledge of STEM topics will be needed to encompass applied science, 21st century technology, and environmental science into STEM topic areas. Teaching is a key aspect of this position, but no formal experience is required.

Required Academic and Experience Qualifications:
A degree or equivalent experience in education, communication, environmental science, computer science, or related degree
Experience communicating to audiences of all ages
Experience managing logistics of outreach and community engagement
Ability to serve as in-classroom or virtual presenter
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Suite and basic office software
Familiarity with social media platforms
AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $16,000, a $6,345 education award upon successful completion of service, healthcare, childcare coverage (for eligible members), and professional development opportunities throughout their term of service.
