Serve Houston Program Design VISTA, OneStar

Interfaith Ministries (IM) of Greater Houston

About the organization

Interfaith Ministries (IM) of Greater Houston’s mission is to bring people of diverse faith traditions together for dialogue, collaboration, and service, as a demonstration of shared beliefs. IM has four core programs: Meals on Wheels/Animeals, Refugee Resettlement, Interfaith Relations and Community Partnerships (IRCP), and Volunteer Houston. Volunteer Houston (VH) is the premier connector of volunteers to nonprofits in the Greater Houston area, particularly during times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the need for health-related outreach and services, especially in low income communities, VH proposes launching a pilot program called Serve Houston that will be a 10-month national service/AmeriCorps initiative for college students in the health professions. The Serve Houston VISTA will help design the program by preparing program evaluation and recruiting applicants to the Serve Houston pilot program.

Duties

As the need in public health increases, particularly among low income neighborhoods in the Houston area, Volunteer Houston (VH) plans to pilot of 10-month national service/AmeriCorps program for college students called Serve Houston. The pilot will focus on students in the health professions, seeking real-world experience conducting outreach to underserved communities. As this is a brand-new initiative, the VISTA will develop training/program manual for Serve Houston and develop a program evaluation method. The Program Design VISTA will create tools to capture feedback from program participants & program leaders for whom program participants are volunteering. The VISTA will also develop a marketing/promotional plan geared toward targeted participant audience. Develop volunteer roles & guidelines based on local nonprofits’ needs. Research and create a database & filing system to track volunteer service hours and ensure quality of services provided.
