Senior Program Assistant: Southern and East Africa

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) seeks a Senior Program Assistant to join its Southern and East Africa (SEA) and support country staff, program officers, senior program manager and the regional director in the day-to-day activities and support in the planning, designing and implementing programs related to strengthening political parties' civic organizations, election bodies, local government and legislatures.


Under close supervision and direction of a program officer, senior program manager or other individual in authority within the team, the Senior Program Assistant will:

* Provide administrative and logistical support to the SEA DC team and country offices, including arranging travel and organizing meetings and conferences
* Contribute to writing and reporting of various documents specific to the team and/or region
* Keep track of program events in focus countries and in DC and assists to organize and maintain electronic and paper files of related documentation and training materials. Compile briefing materials and assists in preparing and supporting staff and consultants on program related travel


Required Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree, preferably in International Relations, Political Science or a related field; Additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement on a one-for-one basis
* Minimum two (2) years of relevant work experience in international development, community organizing, political campaigns, organizational development or legislative affairs preferred
* High level of interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to effectively interact with all levels of staff, U.S. and foreign government personnel and the general public
* High level of oral and written communication skills to effectively present information, respond to questions and prepare written reports in a professional manner
* Capacity to work both independently and as a member of a team
* Exceptional ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
* Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs
* Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired
* In-depth knowledge of basic budget and accounting procedures


This is a union position to be represented by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 2.
