Our mission is, and always has been, to educate Afghan girls. Our vision is of a generation of compassionate and confident Afghan women with the leadership skills to rebuild Afghanistan and guide their homeland into a better future.

Educated women earn higher incomes, marry later in life, and have fewer and healthier children. Educated women raise educated girls who grow to become educated women themselves. Educated women will not allow their children to become extremists.

As our founder Shabana Basij-Rasikh has said: the secret to a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan is no secret at all. It is educated girls.

How we do it.

We are a boarding school of Afghan girls in grades pre-6 through 10. From 2016 through 2021, we operated in Kabul; since 2021 and the Taliban’s return, we have operated in Rwanda.


SOLA is currently seeking qualified individuals for a qualified science teacher (grades 6-10) with ESL training and experience on site in a residential position in Rwanda. Under the supervision of the Dean of Faculty and Principal, the duties of the science teacher include a) full-time teaching; and b) working with other faculty on projects or community-based assignments in an area of professional interest or expertise like assessment, materials design, professional development. Additionally, teachers have dormitory responsibilities and supervise extracurricular activities.

● Ensures that instruction is consistent and coordinated with the program’s curriculum materials so that students meet and exceed learning targets.

● Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of techniques and strategies that develop each student’s ability and skill development in science.

● Administers academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student’s progress.

● Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress and attendance.

● Provides a supportive and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging and varied instructional strategies.

● Participates regularly and actively in meetings with other teachers and managers to provide input to and feedback on the implementation of the curriculum.


Successful candidates need to possess the following abilities: effective pedagogy in student-centered approaches, strong ability to build rapport with and motivate students, organizational skills, communication skills, collegiality, humor, and teamwork.


● Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or additional training is strongly preferred.

● Availability to work in Rwanda starting in August 2024.

● Ability to pass a criminal background check.
