About the organization

Founded in collaboration between the Lakota Nation and the Jesuits, by the invitation of Chief Red Cloud, the Red Cloud Indian School is a private, Jesuit Catholic, K–12 school district in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Dedicated to serving the Oglala Lakota Native American children on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for more than 125 years, RCIS aims to empower our students with an education that is culturally empowering and student centered. In collaboration with the Lakota people and Jesuits, Red Cloud is dedicated to fostering a respect for Lakota and Catholic traditions, an education that is holistic, and a dedication to social justice within our students.

We look for passionate individuals to come serve in our AmeriCorps and Volunteer programs for up to 10 months.

Duties

Typical duties of Red Cloud Volunteers include:

-Teaching classes for grades K - 12 (all subjects).

-Instruction of students during After-School Program, utilizing intervention strategies in consultation with lead teachers.

-Instruction of students in academic strategies during and after school as needed.

-Sponsoring of Extracurricular Enrichment activities both during and after school.

-Planning and preparing for both Academic Intervention and Extracurricular

Enrichment activities during and after school.

-Attending all relevant professional development and training opportunities as assigned.

Qualifications

The member certifies that he/she is a United States citizen, a United States national, or a lawful
permanent resident alien and is at least 17 years of age. The member must also be a high
school graduate or have a GED (or must agree to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent
prior to using the education award). The member must satisfy the National Service Criminal
History Check eligibility criteria pursuant to 45 CFR 2540.202.
