Tahoe National Forest

About the organization

The Tahoe National Forest stretches from the foothills overlooking the Sacramento Valley on the west and across the Sierra crest to the state line. The Tahoe National Forest is one of the most popular forests for recreation in the United States. Millions of people visit the forest each year to hike, camp, swim, kayak, hunt, sight-see, ski, snowboard, rock climb, bicycle ride, and participate in dozens of other activities.

Of the 1,208,993 acres within the boundary of the Tahoe National Forest, 811,740 acres, or 67% are National Forest System lands. The forest is comprised of four districts– the Truckee Ranger District, Sierraville Ranger District, American River Ranger District and Yuba River Ranger District, each unique and all offer excellent recreation opportunities and resources for our public.

The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations!

Duties

These three unique opportunities seek various skill sets, but knowledge with computers is essential (for public affairs, knowledge working with various media platforms) and a strong foundation in customer service and interactions with people is very important. We especially encourage people who have a love of the outdoors and nature, and who would like to make a positive difference in the conservation of our national forests/heritage resources. Currently, we have priority landscapes for both watershed areas and areas damaged by wildfires. We are working on restoration of these areas and also wildfire prevention through vegetation management, especially in our Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas, near where populations of people are living in established communities. These positions offer opportunities for travel out to the forest but are primarily office job positions in their nature. The U.S. Forest Service, under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), offers many opportunities for promotional advancement, internal training via 120-day temporary promotions or classes, and also offers many other great benefits. USDA is an equal opportunity provider, employer and lender. Thank you for your interest and we hope to see you soon!

Qualifications

Qualifications can be a combination of experience and education or experience only. The U.S. Forest Service also offers paid internships for recent graduates, and opportunities for people currently in college working towards their degrees. For a complete list of qualifications for a specific position, you may contact the Administrative Officer on the Tahoe National Forest, located in Nevada City, CA. The positions offered for this posting are Full-Time. However, we do have seasonal and part-time positions available, so I would encourage you to contact us. Positions are advertised on USAjobs.gov. However, due to lag times with Human Resources, not all positions that are open have been advertised at the USA jobs website, and with specific qualifications, Direct Hire Authority may be used to onboard employees non-competitively, so it's VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU CONTACT US for the most current information regarding job opportunities. Thank you!
