The New York Milk Bank
About the organization
The New York Milk Bank (NYMB) is a non-profit milk bank that collects extra breast milk from healthy lactating women, pasteurizes it and distributes it to babies in need throughout NY and the surrounding states. We opened in 2016 and have screened over 3000 donors and distributed over 550,000 ounces of donor milk. NYMB is dedicated to improving the health and survival of infants in need by ensuring the quality control and availability of pasteurized donor human milk if mother’s own milk is unavailable or insufficient. We are dedicated to reducing health disparities by advocating for the use and reimbursement of donor milk. We are fortunate that our generous donors provide enough donor milk not just for premature and sick infants but also for babies born in gay families, adopted and foster babies and babies born through surrogacy.
The Lab Manager decides on the monthly production schedule of donor milk, based on current sales projection.
All aspects of the pasteurization process are supervised including but not limited to:
choosing donors, thawing milk, pooling donors, analyzing donor milk, mixing and pouring milk, bottling milk, pasteurizing, labeling and then quarantining milk until bacterial counts return.
The manager chooses the types of bottles and the type of milk and prepares the milk for thawing. Donors chosen have similar expiration dates and possibly similar gestational ages of the baby. The goal is to pool milk with a total of 5 donors.
The production manager supervises the laboratory technicians and assists them when needed to keep up production.
All aspects of the lab are supervised to keep bacterial counts low and troubleshoot when counts are above the norm.
