One of the 10 largest local police agencies in the United States, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is the primary law enforcement agency for the District of Columbia. Founded in 1861, MPD has a sworn authorized strength of 4,000 members and approximately 600 civilian employees. MPD has a wide variety of sworn and civilian career paths and seeks to ensure that every resident, in every neighborhood, can feel safe and secure. Getting there will require that police and community work even more closely and more cooperatively than ever before. MPD's mission is to safeguard the District of Columbia and protect its residents and visitors with the highest regard for the sanctity of human life. Police Officers will perform the vital public services of preserving the peace, protecting life and property, preventing crime, apprehending criminals, and enforcing the laws and ordinances of the District of Columbia and the United States. No previous law enforcement experience is required to be considered for employment for entry level positions. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements.

Minimum Requirements at time of application:
-Be at least 21 years of age.
-Be a citizen of the United States.
-Possess a valid U.S. Drivers License.
Requirement(s) Entry-Level Police Officer :
-Successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of college credit essentially the equivalent of two years of higher education with course work in any subject matter. Credits from any accredited college or university will be accepted OR
-Served in the Armed Forces of the United States, including the Organized Reserves and National Guard, for two (2) years on active duty and, if separated from the military, have received an honorable discharge.
The current base salary of $58,163.00, after 18 months $61,071 annual. Full base salary during the academy.
