About the organization

CAMBA’s HomeBase Program provides case management and essential services to at-risk individuals and families in Brooklyn and Staten Island to prevent homelessness, helping them overcome problems with public benefits, housing, education, health care and other issues that could impede their ability to maintain stable households. Positions with CAMBA’s HomeBase program are classified as essential under the direction of the Governor of New York State.


This is a Part-Time position, 25 Hours Weekly. The applicant must be available 5 hours daily from Monday-Friday between 9am-5pm. Specific schedule will be discussed and agreed upon prior to hire. Must be willing to work both remotely and in-person from our office in Staten Island.

In this role, you will support clients who are seeking a New York State High School Equivalency diploma through the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). You will tutor adults in academic subjects in order to develop and/or enhance their reading, math and writing skills, research and develop instructional materials and lesson plans, and advise and assess participants as they progress through the NEDP.

Key Responsibilities:

Support the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) by tutoring individuals on targeted academic areas as needed to pursue their high school equivalency diploma.

Conduct NEDP information sessions, clearly communicating the purpose and structure of the program, and determine if the program fits each person’s unique learning needs.

Provide personalized services to remove barriers to engagement, motivate and encourage.

Research and develop tutoring supports to keep tutoring sessions current and relevant.

Proctor program entrance exams while maintaining the confidentiality and security of all testing materials.

Evaluate and provide written feedback on subject areas according to specific criteria.


Education: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) and one year of applicable experience and/or equivalent experience

Other Requirements:

Ability to tutor adults in HSE-level Math and Reading

Experience in adult education (HSE tutoring preferred) - teaching style must be hands-on, interactive, and participatory. Able to tutor both remotely (via Zoom) and in-person.

High energy and enthusiasm to work with adult students and propel them toward success; ability to design and implement innovative programs with a strong attention to detail.

Experience in communicating and working successfully with people from a broad range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds

Excellent oral and written interpersonal communication, organization and computer skills
