About the organization

The Commission's mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering in the state of New York. The Commission administers programs funded by the National Community Service Trust Act of 1993, as amended by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act of 2009. The Commission receives annual federal funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service and makes grants to nonprofits, faith-based organizations, local governments, and educational institutions providing outcome-based services to address community-identified needs.

Duties

New York State COVID-19 Response is an initiative across the government of New York State to build capacity of state agencies to improve employment, food security, and economic opportunity outcomes for New Yorkers dealing with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. New York State Commission on National and Community Service manages this collaborative project with the help of a VISTA Leader who supports in a variety of ways a team of ten VISTA members placed at distinct state government agencies. The VISTA Leader plays a critical role in supporting VISTA members across the state serving to combat the effects of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities. The role of the VISTA Leader is to work closely with the VISTA Project Director in building capacity for the program by mentoring ten VISTA members, providing resources, information, and actionable items, and coordinating team-orientated activities to foster collaboration and innovation. Duties include:
• Co-leading recruitment and assignment process including ensuring completion of all necessary onboarding paperwork and processes
• Working with Project Director on content and delivery for member orientation
• Reviewing progress on individual assignment descriptions
• Creating and distributing communication and outreach materials
• Co-leading VISTA member development programming and days of service
• Providing ongoing mentorship and support during members' service term

Qualifications

• Must be 18 year or older, legally able to work in the U.S., and pass a background check
• Must have successfully completed a term of national service in AmeriCorps or Peace Corps
• Must be willing and able to commute consistently or relocate to Albany/Rensselaer, NY
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Proficiency with Windows Office Suite and Google applications, and ability to learn and use other applications and software for digital meetings, recordkeeping, and other duties
• Experience working collaboratively toward successful outcomes
• Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds
• Interest in poverty alleviation and public administration
