Mercy Corps Northwest AmeriCorps VISTA Leader

Mercy Corps Northwest AmeriCorps VISTA Team

About the organization

The Mercy Corps Northwest VISTA Program works as an intermediary between AmeriCorps VISTA and Oregon nonprofits to develop capacity building projects and recruit, place, train, and support VISTA members in implementing these economic opportunity-focused projects. VISTAs serving with the Mercy Corps Northwest cohort oversee projects focusing on financial education, job skills training, microenterprise, financial asset development, food security, and affordable housing. They are placed throughout the region in various non-profits or government agencies to perform indirect service—working behind the scenes on projects such as volunteer recruitment, program development, and grant writing. Participating in the AmeriCorps VISTA program through Mercy Corps Northwest offers the opportunity to gain advanced project management skills and exercise creativity in program implementation—skills highly desired by employers.

As VISTA Leader, you will serve in Portland, OR directly with the Mercy Corps Northwest (MCNW) VISTA Program—a team of 18 AmeriCorps VISTAs and 2 VISTA Leaders managed by MCNW and stationed at nonprofit organizations and public agencies across the state. AmeriCorps VISTA members perform only indirect service; interaction with clients will be limited and the member will spend the majority of their time in an office setting. However, the VISTA Leader will help alleviate poverty by ensuring that the VISTAs serving throughout Oregon have the support, resources, and training needed to have a successful experience and positive outcomes. Member duties will include: mentoring members; planning and coordinating member training and events; monitoring and supporting member progress through meetings, data collection, tracking, and site visits; supporting member recruitment and onboarding; and strengthening program outreach and marketing. The VISTA Leader position is open to former VISTAs, AmeriCorps members, or Peace Corps volunteers who demonstrated exemplary skills and leadership in community service have completed a term of service by March 2020.
