Lake Health District Population Health VISTA
Oregon Health Authority AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project
About the organization
The Oregon Health Authority AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project aims to alleviate, prevent and reduce poverty by engaging new public health professionals in a year of full-time service in major public health organizations to create or expand public health systems capacity. The project aims to reduce poverty in our communities by building sustainable public health programs and systems that ensure health equity, community resiliency and improved health outcomes.
AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 50 years.
In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year.
Lake Health District includes outpatient and specialty clinic services in Oregon and California; a critical access hospital; and countywide behavioral health services. It also operates the county public health department. Lake Health District’s Population Health Department aims to help Lake County residents live healthier lives.
The AmeriCorps member will identify health challenges of people in poverty in Lake County and draft recommendations by holding listening sessions; identifying volunteers to support and advance those recommendations; and identifying projects, opportunities, and grants to empower people in poverty to effect change in their communities. The member will support outreach efforts to Medicaid members in Lake County by evaluating previous and current efforts. This will be done by coordinating a committee tasked with assessing the effectiveness of website and social media presence and making recommendations to a county advisory council. The member will help partners develop strategies to increase food access and education opportunities. This will include developing a plan for sustaining and expanding nutrition education in Lake County, supporting a Lakeview food bank’s visioning and action plan development process, and identifying and applying for funding to support the action plan.
