Founded in 2009, the Abaarso Network enables transformative change in Somaliland, East Africa, through educating and empowering the human capital needed to achieve ethical and effective development. The Network includes three world-class educational institutions that provide high-potential students with critical access, support, and leadership development: Abaarso School of Science and Technology, Barwaaqo University, and Kaabe Schools.
The Abaarso School represents a unique system within the larger Network, currently serving approximately 240 students in residential Upper and Lower Schools, covering grades 7 to 12.

The Headmaster is responsible for hiring and professional development of staff and teaching faculty consistent with the education program she lays out for the coming school year, accountable for the overall performance and experience of students, staff and faculty at the Abaarso School. Specifically, this includes ensuring academic excellence in both curriculum and instruction across all levels of the school. S/he will ensure consistency and integration across disciplines, programs, grade levels and constituent groups, monitoring and relentlessly improving the delivery of the academic program and professionalism in teaching staff. The Headmaster is accountable for the welfare and safety of students, as well as the implementation and management of student leadership programs, student culture and behavior on campus in academic and non-academic settings. The Headmaster is directly responsible for teacher life, ensuring duty of care and a well-functioning teacher compound that provides both professional and personal enrichment and reasonable comfort and support to staff and faculty. The Headmaster works closely with operations and finance staff to ensure facilities are functioning well and are kept in good order.
As a member of the Senior Management Team of the Abaarso Network, the Headmaster will work closely with other school leaders under the direction of the Abaarso Network Executive Director in support initiatives, policies and strategies that promote the Network.
Essential Qualifications/ Experience:
- 5+ years experience in managing a school or providing leadership in a school
- University education or an equivalent of qualifying experience
- Experience in Somaliland, E. Africa, or a similar operating environment
- Curriculum Development
- Operations and budget management
- Student Assessment
- Team Management
- Teacher Training
- Understanding of East Africa context, particularly education sector and fragile settings
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Results-oriented, entrepreneurial; takes initiative and is undeterred by ambiguous situations
- Fluent spoken and written English
- Post-graduate qualification in management or leadership
- Board development
- Good command of Somali
Salary is commensurate with experience and the mission of the school.
