About the organization

The Northwest Portland International Hostel, founded in 1998, offers low-cost, short-term lodging and opportunities for socializing for up to 240 travelers from around the world. The hostel is centrally located in Portland’s historic and trendy Northwest district and within walking distance to some of Portland's best bars, restaurants and attractions. The hostel hosts over 43,000 annual overnights in dorms and private rooms and is affiliated with Hostelling International USA, the worldwide hostel network. It recently was rated #3 medium size hostel in the world by Hostelworld customer reviews.
The hostel features its own restaurant, the “Hostel Café”, a “down to earth” space for travelers and locals to intermingle. The menu is reasonably-priced, scratch made, and classic American. The café operations are not the responsibility of the hostel manager.


Directly manage up to 25 hostel employees.
Maintain safety and security of hostel buildings and grounds.
Ensure operating compliance with local guidelines and requirements, and Hostelling International USA standards.
Monitor and maintain accurate reservations.
Manage and measure the effectiveness of yield management
Respond to guest feedback or concerns in a timely and friendly manner.
Set staff schedules and responsibilities, ensuring coverage for a positive hostel experience.
Train and provide general support for staff on all issues related to hostel operations.; plan, assign, and direct work; conduct evaluations; address complaints and resolve problems; maintain a safe work environment.
Lead by example, ensuring the hostel’s standard operating procedures for handling cash and credit card transactions, for operating the reservation system, and for tasks required at the open and close of desk shifts are met.
Welcome and check-in guests; orient guests to hostel facilities, customs, and policies; provide information about the local area; promote hostel café and events.
Fill in for hostel staff as needed, encouraging a teamwork environment. Provide overnight, on-call assistance in case of emergencies.
Monitor the work of housekeeping and maintenance staff for efficiency and cleanliness; conduct inspections of rooms and public spaces to ensure they meet and exceed customer expectations
Complete all other duties or projects as assigned by management.


3-5 years of experience in hospitality management
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Ability to lead a cohesive team
Ability to multitask, with attention to detail
Strong organizational skills and ability to respond to quickly changing demands
Strong and mature work ethic
Conflict resolution skills and the ability to act effectively in a crisis
Hostelling experience preferred
Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if schedule requires
Able to lift up to 50 lbs
